The Quiet Men

These two men, my husband and son, share a quiet strength.  They are definitely the strong, silent type.

Here they shared a quiet moment watching the light rain falling over Mount Revelstoke, Canada.

We drove up to the Meadows in the Sky parkway and stopped to look down into the valley and watch the rain below.

This is again for the #30paintingsin30days with my sky theme.

Cloud Studies II – X

cloud studies watercolor

Painting clouds is an art. Some artists like Ron Ranson and John Constable are known for their expansive, breathtaking cloudscapes.

I’m spending the month of September working on my skies, taking Constable’s advice to “paint a sky a day.”

This is a large sheet of watercolor paper with multiple sky studies. They range from soft wispy clouds to stormy skies, some clouds only and others with houses and sailboats.

Doing small exercises like this help build confidence and skill when I do my larger paintings.

This is Day 6 of my #30paintingsin30days with a sky theme.

Not for Sale.

Cloud Study

Day 5 of#30paintingsin30days with my sky theme.

This painting was selected as a DailyPaintworks “Pick of the Day.”

I’m doing a lot practice getting my skies and clouds right.

Soft edges, flooding the paper with water, getting the paint colors and ratios just right.

I do a lot of smaller studies before I do a finished painting.

This is a larger study and I love the way the colors blended and granulated on the paper.

This is watercolor at its best:  you can’t get this effect with any other medium.

Mt. Revelstoke Mist: Sky Painting IV

mt revelstoke mist maria peagler watercolor
Mt. Revelstoke is a tiny Canadian National Park popular with skiiers, as it has the highest vertical peak in the country.  We visited in the summer, and at the top of the peak was snow.  In June.  Quite a surprise for this Southern girl.

We drove to the top of the mountain on the Meadows in the Sky parkway.  On the drive down, it started misting over Revelstoke right at sunset, and it was a breathtaking scene.

This is Day 4 of my #30paintingsin30days with a sky theme.  Getting the mist effect on the mountains required quite a bit of practice without it looking overworked.  I’m happy with the way this turned out.  I wanted to emphasize the light and the depth of the scene, neither of which are easy in landscapes.

The Perfect Shot Study: Sky Painting III

This painting is a study and was was inspired by our family’s trip to Banff National Park this summer.

My son, a professional photographer, walked to the edge of a dock to set up a shot, and I snapped a photo to capture the moment.

I was in awe of the colors in Canada.  The deep blue greens of the cedars and hemlocks, the deep greys of the glaciers, and the turquoise lakes were breathtaking.

In this painting, I intentionally kept the mountains, clouds, and lake varying shades of grey, and placed the brightest colors on the blue sky and my son & the dock in the foreground.

This is day 3 of 30 Paintings in 30 Days, and I’m focusing on a sky theme.  This day was cloudy and grey, with a peek of blue at the sky corners.

40,000 Feet: Sky Painting II

This was my view as I flew to Philadelphia in 2014 to speak at a conference of women business owners.

I marveled at the curved horizon line and gentle clouds.

I’ll never be a pilot or an astronaut, but for this one day I felt I had a tiny glimpse of their unique window to the world.

This is my second painting for the #30paintingsin30days challenge, and I’m incorporating an experiment into each painting.  Yesterday it was painting on 300-lb paper; today I painted on Fabriano hot-press paper.

I love this paper, but it’s not ideal for painting skies.  I needed a thoroughly wet surface, and hot-press buckles even when I taped it down.

I also painted this in an Old Masters palette of Indigo, Yellow Ochre and Indian Red, and wow was it depressing.  I’m glad I’m an artist in the 21st century when we’re spoiled with a range of beautiful paints.

This will become the back of a future, more successful, painting:

Golden Isles Bound

We travel to St. Simon’s Island and Jekyll Island every year, and the cloudscapes on the drive are incredible.

Ironically, I’ve found the most beautiful clouds and sunsets are in open spaces like interstates and large shopping mall parking lots.

This is my first painting for the #30paintingsin30days challenge. I’m focusing on a sky theme, and I’m excited to see the progress I make in my landscapes over the month.

It will be a challenge because we’re traveling for some time during September, so I’ll need to either paint on vacation or prepare some ahead of time.

Truly a joyful endeavor.

Ellijay Apple Orchards

In the north Georgia mountains, we’re getting close to apple season!

This is the view from the top of the orchard hillside in Ellijay, a town in our state known for its apples.

I used an impressionist palette of only three colors and did a lot of mixing for variety.

Cloudy Day in Banff

View of Banff National Park from downtown center. It was a cloudy day and the mountain tops were shrouded in fog.

People stopped to ask me questions about what I was painting and my process. Many artists don’t like questions, but I love talking to people I would never have the opportunity to meet otherwise.

Our family visits national parks often, and I have a time-honored tradition of getting their rubber stamp inked on my journals.  I also had them stamp this watercolor paper in the bottom right corner.

Woodbridge Inn Water Tower

water tower watercolor woodbridge inn jasper ga

Our little town has a famous chef: Hans Rueffert, who was on one of the Food Network’s reality chef shows years ago. His restaurant, The Woodbridge Inn, is a local favorite known for fresh, local dishes and creative pairings of food.

To get to the restaurant, you drive over this old wooden bridge with the huge water tower next to it. This scene is one of my favorites in downtown Jasper. I painted it plein air on a cloud day until lightning started, and then it was time for me to pack up! Fortunately, I got enough of this painted that I didn’t have to complete it at home.
